Palaces and Parks

One of the oldest parks in the Oder-Spree lake district can be found at Diedersdorf Castle, which was built in the manor house style in the middle of the 18th century for the Kunow Council of War. By the end of the Second World War, the property had changed ownership three times and altered its appearance throughout three stylistic epochs, from Baroque through Classicism to Historicism. Luckily, it was spared devastation at the end of the War, as it was being used as a temporary military headquarters at the time. It is now owned by Brandenburg Schlösser GmbH and is not open to the public.
The park behind the castle is largely in its natural state and was expanded in the 19th century as far as Lake Halbesee. Individual old trees and groups of trees, the pond and stream and the still discernible historic vistas indicate that there was once a landscape garden here. These vistas divide it into an old and a modern part. The park is a very popular regional destination for a day out for the people of Brandenburg and is ideal for long walks.
