Straupitz Dutch Windmill

The Dutch windmill in Straupitz is the last and only remaining triple mill in Europe. Three original restored and functional mill works are preserved under one roof: the meal, oil and saw mill. The comprehensively refurbished technical gem is operated by a very active mill association. ‘Spreewaldgold’ linseed oil in Germany’s last operating historic linseed oil mill. The tasty linseed oil is sold only here and not available in any other shops. Visitors to the mill are welcome to taste the oil. Following a tour, guests can enjoy, for example, tasty potatoes in the skin with curd and the famous Spreewald linseed oil at the mill shop.

In its current form with the 18 metres tall brick tower, the Dutch mill was built in 1850, replacing the older and smaller post mill that used to be located right next to it. The saw mill was added in 1885, and the oil mill in 1910. In 1923, the sails were struck by lightning and rendered unusable. The mill has since been operated using the electric motor. The municipality of Straupitz has owned the mill since 1998. The mill was completely renovated in 2001/2002 and it received new sails and a new cap.

The working example of European cultural heritage is operated very successfully by an active mill association. It is a producing technical monument, as well as a highly enjoyable and educational tourist attraction.
