Gela and her goats: Karolinenhof (farmers’ association: Verbund Ökohöfe association of organic farms)

The road turns off a typical Brandenburg avenue to a narrow lane in the direction of Ziegenkäserei & Wiesencafé Karolinenhof goat’s cheese dairy and meadow café. It is quiet and beautiful here at Gela Angermann’s farm, surrounded by fields and meadows. One splash of colour stands out, the dark red house with the Wiesencafé opposite the farm shop with the glass conservatory.

Karoliner goats

From there, it is on to the goat sheds and meadows; the organic farmer keeps a motley crew about 130 Karoliner goats, a lively mix of German Improved Fawns and German Improved Whites, Toggenburgs, Anglo-Nubians and Thuringian Forest Goats.

Goat’s cheese specialities

The goats are milked twice a day. The milk is then taken to the farm’s own goat’s cheese dairy and processed to make various goat’s cheese specialities or sent to the farm shop or to the Wiesencafé’s certified kitchen.

Goat season

The season at Karolinenhof is of course based on the rhythm of the goats and runs from mid-February to mid-November. The kids are born at the beginning of the year, marking the start of the season and cheese production. Up into March, guests can visit the stall and watch the stall mistress milking and kids suckling.

On the second weekend in June, Karolinenhof opens for the Brandenburger Landpartie event and in August they celebrate the Goat’s Wedding.

Wiesencafé

The café is pleasant in any weather. When the sun is shining, there are 80 seats outdoors and if it is a little colder, there is a further 45 seats in the conservatory heated by a fireplace. The playground is very family-friendly with a trampoline, a swing and straw bales for jumping and tumbling about. Karolinenhof is Berlin-Brandenburg premier address for organic dining and is 100% certified organic since 2000.

Regional cooperation

The range at the Karolinenhof farm shop is completed with products from regional organic producers and lovely goat souvenirs. One of these regional organic producers is Kuhhorst Organic Farm. It is easy to get to on foot along a lane that is roughly one kilometre long and shaded by trees, and it also has a farm shop – with Kuhhorst noodles, sausages and milk products, for example.

Product range

The farm shop offers about 20 varieties of cheese – from raw goat’s milk cheese to cream cheese to mature hard cheese, as well as whole 1.5 kilogrammes wheels. There is also goat’s milk, goat’s milk products, goat’s meat, kids subject to pre-ordering, bread, baked goods, honey, jam and sausage.
