Pritzen is 500-year-old village right next to the former Greifenhain surface mine. It narrowly escaped destruction in 1993 when the lignite excavators in the mine were stopped. However, by this stage, most of the population had left the village. The Pritzen peninsula was left in a dramatically changed landscape. Two European Biennales were held in and around the village in 1993 and 1995, and countless artists were attracted by Pritzen and its bizarre lunar landscape. 23 works of art were created at the time, 16 of which can still be admired here. Today, the "Kunstscheune" in Pritzen provides space for exhibits, workshops and artistic events.
