The Maria Hilf Catholic church in Herzfelde was built in 1934/35 to designs by Berlin architect Josef Bachem in order to meet the growing needs of the Catholic community. Influenced by work in the brick and cement industry as well as in agriculture, the community found a spiritual center in the church.
The simple architecture is particularly impressive, enhanced by a carved Madonna and Child made of Swiss stone pine. This work of art was donated by Cardinal Meisner in 1983 and is a striking element of the church. The church and the adjoining rectory bear witness to the rich history of the Catholic community in the region.
