Settlement of the Oderbruch (former marshland)
Frederick II established settlements on the Oderbruch (former marshland) after the successful drainage of the former marshland area. The settlers in the area – from Mecklenburg, Saxony, Hesse-Darmstadt, Austria, Switzerland and the Palatinate – were interested in the hard work of the colonists due to the favourable conditions (for example, their full right to inherit). The effort was worthwhile compared to the mostly poor sandy soils in the Mark Brandenburg region.
Peaceful conquest of a province
Twelve new villages were established by 1762 so during a visit in 1763 – at the end of the Seven Years’ War, King Frederick II was able to say: “Here I have conquered a province peacefully.”
Colonist village of Wuschewier
The village of Neutrebbin, built in 1755, remained the largest and economically strongest of the new villages in the Oderbruch (former marshland) until the start of the 20th century. The colonist village of Wuschevier, now a district of Neutrebbin, was established in 1757 on the edict of the Margrave Carl von Schwedt and based on a plan by the Royal Hunting Engineer Netcke. The latter appreciated that the village meadows had to be angled to fit the course of the River Wuscheviere. The church, the most important building, was to be built at the bend in the river.
Multifunctional building: school and prayer house
The school and prayer house was built here in 1764. Today, it is one of the few "multifunctional" buildings that still exist, but which were once very widespread in the Oderbruch (former marshland), in which the church hall and classroom and the teacher's home were all under one roof. The farmstead at Oderbruchstrasse 10 also dates back to when the village was first built.
