The monastery brewery in Neuzelle is located just outside the Cistercian monastery. It is the last working monastery brewery in the State of Brandenburg. Beer has been brewed here based on traditional craftsmanship for more than 400 years. To begin with, beer was only produced for consumption by the monks, and later (1589) for the surrounding villages. It is now available for shipping around the world. However, the dark brown and very palatable drink is not permitted to call itself a ‘beer’, but it has to make do with the name ‘Schwarzer Abt’. It is immensely popular among visitors and locals, nevertheless.
During a
tour of the brewery, visitors can take a look behind the scenes, learn more about the exquisite drink and taste it at the end of the tour.
