Bird watching

The nature conservation area, which covers around 489 hectares, is a unique natural paradise. The River Löcknitz flows through the region for around 14 kilometres in meandering curves, and its natural shore area thus creates a biotope for countless rare species of flora and fauna. There are around 100 species of birds here, including cranes. In winter, when the surrounding lakes and waterways have frozen over, many of the birds come to the Löcknitz Valley to search for food.
An eight kilometre long hiking trail runs from Fangschleuse station, behind the Große Wallbrücke bridge, along the River Löcknitz through the unspoilt valley. Along the two-hour walk, you can watch the birds or discover rare species of orchid. The hiking trail ends at Hangelsberg station.
