Bird watching

The observation point is located in an extensive meadow area in the Rhin-Havelluch north of Nauen. The area near Utershorst is a pre-gathering spot for the cranes: they rest here for hours in the late afternoon before returning to their roost at nightfall. On some days up to 15,000 birds can be seen here. Bean geese, white-fronted geese and whooper swans occasionally fly over the meadows. Occasionally you can spot Montagu’s harriers or rough-legged buzzards out hunting.

Tip:
  • The cranes are best seen during their autumn migration from September to November.
  • A detour to Linum is recommended. The area around the Linumer Teiche is part of the largest crane resting site in Brandenburg.Storchenschmiede Linum run by NABU Berlin provides information material on this topic as well as offering guided tours of the area.

How to get there:
From the A10 motorway: Take the Berlin-Spandau exit and follow the B5 for Nauen. The road is joined by the B273 shortly afterwards: follow this as far as Nauen. From Nauen drive westwards towards Hertefeld; after about 3 kilometres you will pass through Utershorst, shortly after this you will cross the Großer Havelländischer Hauptkanal; after 100 metres the road turns left, at the top of the bend you will see the tower on your right – you can park here.
