An association of mostly former political prisoners is the owner and operator of the memorial, which was created in the former notorious and largest political prison in the GDR. The exhibition "Checkered Clouds - Political Detention in the Cottbus Prison 1933-1989" shows typical examples of political injustices from the time of the Nazi regime of terror or the SED dictatorship. 28 prisoner biographies and reports of political prisoners are presented on an area of 450 m². These address a variety of topics that are characteristic of the respective time. The reasons for the detention in Cottbus, the life history of the prisoners and attempts to maintain dignity even under unworthy conditions are highlighted. Reconstructed cells can be seen on the second floor of the memorial after decades.
