Gardens and parks

Stadtpark Fürstenwalde is located in the “green town on the Spree”. With its lush greenery, it stretches all the way to the historic centre. Fürstenwalde gained its reputation in the 1920s due to its large population of trees and numerous small and large lawn areas. The Stadpark in the west of the town was laid out from 1836 onwards by land administrator Friedrich Schulze. Initially situated in the area of the Spree riverbank only, it was subsequently extended to Eisenbahnstrasse, which was opened in 1842.
The central point of interest in the city park is the fountain at Großer Stern, which was built in 1939. In the eastern section of the park there is a larger open space, the former Wilhelmplatz. Several peace oaks were planted here after the wars of unification and remain firmly established there to this day. In the north-west, an area of the municipal park was converted into the Fürstenwalde Heimattiergarten (Fürstenwalde indigenous animal garden) in 1975. Today more than 300 animals of some 70 species live here, mainly European in origin. The park stage was opened in 1955 and regularly hosts open-air events in summer.
