The first church in this place was built in the Romanesque style by Cistercian monks in the late twelfth century. After it was destroyed in a fire in 1570, it was rebuilt as a brick church in the Gothic pointed arch style, while the original granite base of the first church remained.
In 1864, stepped gables that can still be seen in old postcards, were added in the context of comprehensive refurbishment work. However, these were not restored, when the church was rebuilt after World War II. The tower was not rebuilt at its original height, either.
The church is open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from June to September. Visits outside those hours must be arranged with the parish office. Altstadt 25-26, telephone: +49 33678-72812.
