Neuzelle Monastery has two churches: The somewhat smaller "Evangelische Pfarrkirche zum Heiligen Kreuz (church) [Evangelical Church of the Holy Cross - Neuzelle Monastery]", which is a little further away, was intended for public pastoral care and was built as a "people's church" for the people. On the opposite side is the collegiate church of St Mary, which was reserved for the monks and the convent of the monastery.
The cross-domed building was built on the site of the older 14th-century Pfortenkirche (Gate Church) and is decorated with beautiful ribbonwork. Here, the largest ceiling fresco in Lower Lusatia depicts the triumph of the Catholic Church.
The Kreuzkirche revels in the Baroque style, the dome fresco measures 128 square metres and literally allows the faithful to look up into the sky.
After the Reformation, the monks in Neuzelle took intensive care of the remaining Catholics in the region. To this end, the Protestant Church of the Holy Cross was built in rococo style around 1730.
Since the dissolution of the monastery in 1817, it has been used as a Protestant parish church, while the former monastery church of St Mary's has remained Catholic. Today, both parishes exist in close proximity to each other on the monastery grounds. A special feature of Brandenburg-Neuzelle is the ecumenism that is practised here.
The Protestant Church of the Holy Cross can be visited individually or as part of a guided tour.
