Settlement of the Oderbruch (former marshland)

Frederick II established settlements on the Oderbruch (former marshland) after the successful drainage of the former marshland area. The settlers in the area – from Mecklenburg, Saxony, Thuringia, Austria, Switzerland and the Palatinate – were interested in the hard work of the colonists due to the favourable conditions (for example, their full right to inherit). The effort was worthwhile compared to the mostly poor sandy soils in the Mark Brandenburg region.

Peaceful conquest of a province

A total of 12 new villages were established in the Oderbruch (former marshland) by 1762 so during a visit – at the end of the Seven Years’ War, King Frederick II was able to say: “Here I have conquered a province peacefully”

Colonist village of Neulietzegöricke

Neulietzegöricke was established in 1753 as a colonist village on the former water meadows of Lietzegöricke, a farming and fishing village. The colony consisted of eight large, five average-sized and fourteen smaller houses for 47 families. The characteristic village with a broad village green, a centrally located church (half-timbered building from 1840) and a village inn as well as uniformly sited farmsteads with prestigious half-timbered houses from the end of the 18th and the start of the 19th century have been preserved to this day.
