The oldest and most famous geological nature trail in the state of Brandenburg is located in Altranft, a district of Bad Freienwalde. Under the direction of Hans Ohnesorg, the long-time director of Oberlandesmuseum Bad Freienwalde, this educational trail was laid out in 1964 with a group of students from Altranft on the grounds of a sandpit. The Geologischer Lehrpfad Altranft (Altranft Geological Nature Trail) was declared a natural monument in 1989 and has been a protected landscape feature since 1990. The natural trail is very much in the grip of the vegetation: much of it is now overgrown, but this in itself gives the trail a magical character.
The overgrown Altranft Geological Trail can be reached via the B 167: a signpost at the crossroads points the way to the trail. If you are coming from Bad Freienwalde and driving in the direction of Baasee, the nature trail is just behind the railway bridge on the right. Parking spaces are available at the entrance of the village. From here you can continue on foot.
