Alternatively the start can be made in the Spree headwaters in the Lausitzer Bergland in Saxony, about 100 km south-east of Spremberg. It is possible to take the train to Zittau and cycle about 20 km on the D4 long-distance cycle path to the source in Ebersbach-Neugersdorf or Kottmar.
